Run 2277 – Horsehay

Hares Mark & Wendy at The Travellers Joy in Horsehay – a favourite haunt of DH3.

It was a blue sky chilly morning and the clocks had gone back, the sunny morning brought another good pack out as DH3 welcomed back friends from Shawbury Joggers who were having a busy week-end after taking part in the Pie Athlon at Grinshill on Saturday morning (as did Jane, Andi and Dave M). We also welcomed another Virgin from Shawbury Joggers but we will get back to him later.

At the OnOn the Hares informed us that – anyone getting lost and missing would have an interesting time on the trail, they said ‘don’t go over crosses and there might be crosses where you don’t expect them to be!  If you ignore them you may end up going around in circles and be back to the pub before it opens!’

With the Hash On the pack set off,  4 minutes later a few stragglers arrived and set off in hot pursuit.

The area around Horsehay has been hashed on many occasions but the Hares still found new territory and their cunning use of False Trails kept it very fresh. At times it became a game of spot the footpath, from one field to the next.

  • Paula, – The Joint Master, had a bonding experience with a four legged equine friend while feeding it a handful of grass.

  • Gary had a run in with a stile which broke and winded him.
  • Wendy, who was concentrating on keeping the pack on trail and making sure no one missed her checks, lost her footing and took a spill.

Keeping up a good pace the FRBs were soon back at The Travellers Joy.  The pub is popular with the Hash having a good selection of Wye Valley beers, my personal favourite is HPA but they also had Butty Bach and Dorothy Goodbody.  Adrian (Mr Pink) was busy collecting more sign-ups for the Hash Dickensian Christmas Extravaganza, I don’t know who he has cast as Mr Scrooge yet but I am sure someone is getting a lot of nominations!

With Halloween just around the corner Chris H. seemed to disappear and in her place we were visited by The Wicked Witch of The Hash!

Our Joint Master Paula called the Circle. She began by pumping up the Pack, I can’t hear you!  What did the Pack think of today’s trail?  – Everyone was impressed that it was, just long enough, just sunny enough & just cold enough.

Deserved Down Down’s for the Hares  Wendy & Mark.  I have to say Wendy downed it impressively!  Next Paula welcomed Roger our new Virgin from Shawbury Joggers to DH3 and the Hash family. The final Down Down after a little banter about whether the passenger should get one and it went to Andi for getting lost and missing the start of the trail.

With the last Down Down complete the Circle was handed over to Mary, The Raffle Mistress,  to spread more joy to the masses and that lucky winner of the Toblerone, – this week Wei Lee.

The Landlord & Landlady generously provided excellent hash fare of sausages, bread & chips at no charge as they enjoy having their pub full of noisy boozy hashers, – go figure?  It wasn’t hard to notice a drop in volume this week as some Hashers were seen going up for seconds & thirds, someone wasn’t getting Sunday dinner!

Time was passing and with that hour less daylight Hashers began to drift off to do Sunday stuff, which may have been visiting an Asian supermarket for raffle prizes or drinking a pint in The Pheasant.

Run 2276 – Shrewsbury

Hares: Michael & Ewa.

Pub: The Dog & Pheasant Inn,

The pack gathered by the weir off Sydney Street in Shrewsbury under a glorious blue sky.

Another great turnout with some Returners and a couple of Virgins, it would also be a three dog trail. Many of the pack had turned up early especially to try and spot salmon in the River Severn which had been seen tackling the weir, but none were spotted by the Hash.

The Hares called the pack to order and gave us the word, no cows, no bull with the trail laid in sawdust and with that it was OnOn! The trail was pavement and footpaths, no shiggy this week as it took us through back street terraces into town and along the banks of the River Severn and around the far side of The Quarry.

The On In took us back along The River Severn and the FRBs were able to pick up a good pace back to the cars. As the pack returned and everyone changed out of their running kit some still took time to look for salmon. It was reported that while we were out on the trail a salmon was spotted, but not by a Hasher.

A short walk took us to The Dog & Pheasant a very traditional town pub.

It was soon very full and noisy with the clamour of chatting Hashers recounting their views of the days run. The pub had a great selection of beers on tap, I went for Sunbeam, and they also had Oxford Gold & Wainwrights which seemed to be very popular. With everyone back in the pub our new Joint Master Paula held her first Circle.

First we had Down Down’s for The Hares, what did the pack think, good, long, hot and impressed how they conjured up the blue skies after the rain and mud from last week. Paula asked the pack for a note and then conducted them in a chorus of ‘Here’s to them there true blue…..’ and Mike downed an impressive pint, has he been practicing? We then moved onto the Virgins, first Seamus who is Mike’s neighbour and owner of Hash Hound Benson. Something of a first I think when the dog hashes before his master! Then Paula welcomed Pam, now this was her second trail with DH3 but she missed the après and so missed her Down Down.

Paula welcomed the new Hashers to the Hash Family as members of Donnington H3. I think if you blinked you missed Pam down her half of coke. Great start by Paula the next twelve months should be very entertaining. With the run dealt with JK took the Circle to introduce the new Joint Mistresses for 2018-19 Dave L. (Boris or Doris or Don’t Ask as appropriate) & Jackie. Circle was then handed over to Mary, The Raffle Mistress to spread Hash bounty, eggs anyone or not so well disguised beer bottles or Toblerone. Yeah we had a winner, well only with the generosity of the Hashers who didn’t pick the bar up. Then the pack settled down to the excellent sandwiches pickles and olives which Ewa prepared, – the volume noticeably dropped!

They say a family who Hashes together stays together this may be true but probably not if you Hare together 🙂 As we moved into afternoon the pack thinned and began to drift off to do Sunday stuff or just go to The Tiddly for an Old Rosie or two. So ended another great Hash & great company.

See everyone next week at The Travellers Joy in Horsehay,

Hares Mark & Wendy

OnOn FINGERLESS

Run 2275 – Hadnall

Donnington H3 R*n 2275 Hare: Rockin Robin. As Storm Callum battered the Welsh and South West coasts yesterday we still got plenty of wind and rain in Shropshire, so would Robin’s trail survive?

Well it was a wet grey morning when a hardy pack gathered at the Salopian Brewery at Hadnall, unfortunately for the pack Robin’s directions were not that accurate as several cars had to be moved. With pack gathered around Robin he gave them the word, there would be cows and sheep and no strange marks, Robin doesn’t do strange marks 🙂

The pack was OnOn in to the drizzle and mud in the countryside around Hadnall. There were plenty of long trails and checks, lots of shiggy a word almost forgotten through the dry summer of ankle breaking pasture! The FRBs kept up a good pace with no re-groups we made it back home just over the hour mark.

I headed into the New Inn and the warmth of the bar, nice to see the welcoming sign outside to the Hashers, just as well we can’t read and the pub doesn’t know that we aren’t a Running Club! The New Inn had several nice beers on tap, my first was a pint of Tribute. Circle time and as none of the new Joint Masters were in attendance I carried on, you lucky people 🙂

First Down Down was for todays Hare Rockin Robin, what did the pack think ? JK too wet, Wendy too wet, in fact the whole pack thought it was too wet. DH3 aren’t mean and we agreed Robin deserved his Down Down, here’s to him he’s true blue….

Next we welcomed another virgin to the Hashing family, welcome Simon you are most welcome to Donnington Hash House Harriers and The Drinking Club with the Running Problem 🙂 One final Down Down to a Hasher with a Hangover, nice one Graham as they say a little of what makes you bad makes you better !

Circle then handed over to Mary the Raffle Mistress and a happy virgin taking away a raffle prize. With no food today the pack sampled a few more beers from Bass to Timothy Taylor Landlord. Plenty of friendly banter and finally todays Hash came to an end.

Next weeks trail is from The Weir in Shrewsbury, Hares are Michael & Ewa and back to The Dog & Pheasant.
